At the heart of London are two cities: The City of London and the City of Westminster.  The heart of our nation is in political chaos, and when chaos appears it is like pain in the body.  It is a warning sign that something potentially bad is happening.  If it is a pain in our body, we go to see a physician.  When it is chaos in our nation, we go to the Lord, the Great Physician.

Dominic Lawson wrote an article in The Sunday Times (10th July) with the title, “Leave God at the gates of parliament, Mrs Leadsom — or end up like Blair,” A strange title when one considers it was Tony Blair’s mouth-piece, Alistair Campbell that said, “We don't do God.”  Look at where that got Blair…and the Labour Party!

I read another article during the week about Andrea Leadsom speaking about her being a mother.  Interestingly, I went to do my Bible reading for that day which was Judges, chapters 4 and 5.  It spoke of Deborah, a prophetess and the first female judge (leader) of Israel.  She may have lived during a time when men failed to step up to the mark, and we see this reflected in Barak’s response to God’s command issued through Deborah (Judges 4:6-8).  It typifies many men during the Church age, where women have had little choice but to take the lead; going against the theology of some. (Judges 4:6-8).  It happens in politics too of course.  There were two women running for leadership of the Conservative Party until Leadsom dropped out of the contest.  Theresa May is the new leader, and Prime Minister.  May might be earth’s choice, but is she Heaven’s choice?

There are two women mentioned in the pages of Scripture we are looking at, Deborah and Jael.  Jael was a Kenite, and a descendant of Hobab, Moses’ father-in-law.  Some question her killing of Sisera because it was not done in warfare; but Deborah sang her praises (5:24).  Though speaking about a prohibition on cross-dressing, Jael is considered to have fulfilled what was written in Torah where it is taught that a man’s article shall not be upon a woman (Deuteronomy 22:5).  Rather than use a weapon, which is considered a man’s article, she reached out for a tent peg (Judges 5:26).  About the actual killing, from the aspect of Judaism, a transgression that is done for the sake of Heaven is greater than a mitzvah that is not done for the sake of heaven.  We might hold this thought when considering the actions of Rahab in Joshua Chapter 2.

Deborah sat under a palm tree and settled disputes (Judges 4:5), and according to Judaism, she taught Torah.  Deborah was married to a man named Lappidoth (Lit., ‘torches’).  In Judaism the teaching is that he was called such because his wife (Deborah) made wicks for the Tabernacle; and she made them thick so that they would give out abundant light.  Judaism teaches that in response, the Holy One, Blessed is He, said, “Deborah, you sought to increase My light; I too will increase your light in Judah and Jerusalem.”

It is said of Deborah that she was independently wealthy; she owned palm trees in Jericho, Orchards in Ramah, oil-producing olives in Bethe-el, and white earth in Tur Malka.  I think you could say that she was a business woman with experience in the business world; and though she didn’t particularly have leadership experience of a nation, she was God’s choice to be leader of Israel.  God’s choices and man’s choices are often in conflict.  I think too, that Deborah sitting under the palm tree to settle disputes could be likened to elders, or the king sitting at the city gate (2 Samuel 18:1-5, 19:1-8; Deuteronomy 21:18-21; Ruth 4:1-11).  A gate was a place where rulers met and counsel was given.

What caught my attention is in 5:7, “Deborah, arose, arose a mother in Israel.”  It was the reference to “mother” that caused me to look at this a little closer.  Look also at 5:6: “When they chose new gods, war came to the city gates…”

While we investigate and study the life and times of Deborah, we are challenged to look into our own lives and our own times.  In her victory song in Judges Ch.5, Deborah mentions that when she called the other tribes to join them in the fight against a coalition of Canaanite kings headed up by Sisera, the enemy of Israel, the tribes of Dan, Reuben, and Asher failed to respond to her call (5:16-23).  One proposal put forward is that many in the tribe of Dan appeared to serve in the ships of the sea peoples (v17), the Philistines and Canaanites in that area.  Others suggest Dan had their own shipping vessels.  Very recently, archaeologists, for the first time ever, have found a cemetery in Israel that is thought to belong to the Philistines, along with the remains of 200 people who were buried there alongside jewellery and perfumed oil.

Natural phenomenon served a part in the defeat of Sisera.  God can use nature to work out His purposes.  There was a cloudburst and subsequent flood of the river Kishon causing Sisera’s chariots to get stuck in the mud. (5:19-22).  God, acting with His people brought victory.  The people of God must expect the unexpected from God when fighting the enemy.  God’s people in Britain are in a spiritual battle.  We have just come through a Referendum on the EU but there has been an ensuing chaos since the result was not the right one for many.  London is the heart of our nation, and the City of Westminster is the electric energy that keeps the heart of London and the nation pulsating.  Yet it is here that we are seeing the most chaos.  Westminster is in a state of confusion.  We have a resigning Prime Minister that reneged on his promise to take Britain out of the EU if he didn’t get the changes he wanted.  Had he kept to his promise we might not be in such a whirlpool of confusion now.  Britain needs the Gospel to be proclaimed in the power of the Spirit.

Remaining in the book of Judges, this time Chapter 6, when the Lord appeared to Gideon and said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior” (v12).  Gideon replied, “If the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us?”  In all that is happening, the Lord is with us, and we have to listen to what He is saying to us.  At one time the Church overemphasised its teaching on Satan.  These days you hardly hear Satan mentioned; so it is time to revise, and to learn from Scripture just who the enemy is that we are to engage in this battle for souls.  Here are a few verses from Scripture; link those to the comment by Dominic Lawson about leaving God at the gate.  That is what Satan would like us to do, particularly concerning the City of Westminster and Parliament.

“And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.” (Revelation 12:3)

“And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” (Revelation 12:9)

“And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.” (Revelation 13:2)

“And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast...” (Revelation 13:4)

“And I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs; for they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them together for the war of the great day of God, the Almighty” (Revelation 16:13-14)

“He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years” (Revelation 20:2).

We understand from these Scriptures that one of the descriptions for Satan is the dragon.

Dragons here and Dragons there

The London dragons that we will be thinking about at the end of this article, caught my attention, not because there is anything particularly sinister about them, but because of the spiritual significance of London, and the City in particular being a centre of attention by Satan.

Chaos can be a symptom of demonic activity whether in a person, a family, a town, or a nation.  Out of chaos comes order, The New World Order.  This is a title some have given to a world government headed up by Antichrist.  We are not yet in that situation, but we are undoubtedly headed that way.  Readers will not be surprised at the recent headline, “German military prepares to ‘shape new world order.’”  Emerging from 70 years of post-war restraint, Germany is preparing to play a greater military role on the world stage.

Britain coming out of the EU is a bit of a hiccup to those that want to bring in a ‘better world’ (One World Government), but we are not yet totally separated from the EU.  A baby leaving its mother’s womb is still attached to her by the umbilical cord.  Until that is severed, the child and mother are still one.  The leading politicians in the Brexit campaign are all impotent, having fallen by the wayside.  The powers that be have removed them, whether they be demonic powers, the power of the media, politicians, business, all have had a hand in removing those that campaigned to leave the EU.  People looked to the human qualities when calling for Theresa May; they were not looking to God.  Claiming they wanted someone to fill the gap created by Cameron’s resignation, quickly, to lessen the uncertainty surrounding the nation; the character assassins shot down the remaining candidate, Leadsom.  The media and some of her fellow MPs were like ferocious animals attacking their prey.  May is said to regularly attend church, but has also chosen to be quiet about her faith – “I like to keep my personal life personal,” she says.  Theresa May’s challenge to Andrea Leadsom to sign up to a ‘clean campaign pledge’ – including an agreement not to work with UKIP, was quite simply setting a trap, when it was the media that were misreporting Leadsom, and her ‘colleagues’ misrepresenting her.  It is business as usual in Westminster, or, the usual business.  Cameron’s crowning glory and legacy as he vacates No.10 today, is his redefining marriage.  This was Cameron’s challenge to the Living God, who is also maligned by the world media.

The new Prime Minister has promised Brexit means Brexit (whatever that means), suggesting we will leave the EU, but what currency is a promise by a politician these days?  Was her turning the wrong way when she came out of No.10 yesterday after Cameron’s final cabinet meeting, a prophetic action?  The dragons, I think, came to mind simply to draw attention to the fact that Satan, the enemy of God, and the foe of God’s people is seeking to control the nation’s Capital.  There are people working against the Referendum result seeking to reverse that decision, by hook or by crook.  The media is biased in its reporting and is controlled by corrupt minds.  People are becoming increasingly anti-Christian, while London’s electorate voted in its first Muslim Mayor.  Leaving God at the gate is Satan’s strategy, not God’s.  The Dragon wants the gateways to London guarded by his demons, that the Name of Jesus does not enter; but the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16).   “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.  We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God” (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).  Weapons of war are to be employed during warfare.  If the enemy is not engaged, he will walk all over the nation.  God has given him permission; but God has also given us the weapons to deal with him.  Are God’s people for the Lord?  Or, are God’s people for remaining in their sleep-induced coma?  The enemy is at work in the Church too!

Is one betrayal in this Westminster drama worse than another?  Is Theresa May God’s choice for Prime Minister?  Algemeiner report that she is a strong supporter of Israel.  In her complexity she also claims that “many British people benefit a great deal from the guidance offered by sharia teaching” (and other religious codes).  Has Satan withdrawn from this battle since the Referendum result?  He will not give up Westminster so easily!  Confusion reigns where a man can be barred from promotion for sending suggesting text messages to a woman.  Barring the man from promotion is a correct action; but practicing lesbians and homosexuals are promoted to high positions in the political arena without hindrance; indeed, it appears to be something of an advantage in the ungodly turn this nation has taken, where evil is good, and good is evil.

Will God do the unexpected?  If Christians are putting on the whole armour of God, and making their stand in prayer, intercession, and proclamation, perhaps they will achieve an unseen, spiritual victory in the heavens, that will work out on earth and in the final severing from the EU.  The Referendum was not the end of the war.  It was one battle in this war; an important battle, but not the end.  We must work for a pure heart and clean hands to be created in our nation (Psalm24:4).

There is an article in the Independent on Theresa May, “When you cross-reference Theresa May's speech with her voting record, it's as if she didn't mean anything she said”.  See the link:

Someone once said, a nation gets the leader it deserves.

City of London Boundary Dragons

For those that want to look up the locations of the boundary dragons:

The boundaries of the City of London are marked by short black posts each carrying the

City's Coat of Arms.  The City of London's Coat of Arms has two dragons supporting the City's crest.  At ten locations around the City the boundary is marked by a dragon.

There are the two Victoria Embankment Dragons – These are the original dragons on which all the others are based.  They lived under the entrance to the Coal Exchange in Lower Thames Street until 1963 when it was demolished. After that they took up residence on either side of the Victoria Embankment.  It was then decided that dragons be used to mark the boundary of the City of London.  The dragons at Victoria Embankment are special, in that they mark the boundary between the City of London and the City of Westminster, with the dragon facing outwards from the City of London.

The Aldersgate Dragon – Aldersgate was one of the original seven gates of the City.

The Aldgate Dragon – Aldgate was another of the City gates.

The Bishopsgate Dragon – Bishopsgate was another of the City's seven gates.

The Blackfriars Bridge Dragon – There is the Blackfriars Bridge dragon with the Blackfriars railway bridge in the background.

The Farringdon Dragon

The two Holborn Dragons

The two London Bridge Dragons

The Moorgate Dragon

The Temple Bar Dragon – This dragon is considered a different breed to the other dragons.  The Temple Bar Dragon Stands guard over the boundary between the City of London and the City of Westminster.  The Temple Bar dragon is described as looking fiercer than the other dragons.

“And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever” (Revelation 20:10)

“On this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it” (Matthew 16:18).

Blessings and shalom,
