MATTHEW 3:1-12, MARK 1:2-8, LUKE 3:1-18

John the Baptist may have looked rough and ready but he was of good stock, not just the product of two priestly lines, but with his blood connection to the Messiah himself. This could have gone to his head and, in today’s parlance, his street-cred should have been sufficient to make folk sit up and listen. Yes, they listened, but the ‘religious elite’ were unhappy with the message, particularly when he referred to them as a bunch of snakes!

John could have built himself up a lucrative ministry here but instead he was content with his lowly status. All that mattered was the message … and it wasn’t about him. All that he preached was to prepare people for the real deal, Jesus himself. He had no truck with fame or fortune or acceptance, it was all about the message. Oh that we were so driven, willing to forsake our comforts and reputation, to point people to the one, whose sandals none of us are worthy to carry.
