It was all a matter of authority. No-one had seen such authority before. Demonic spirits were powerless before his command, because they knew who they were dealing with. In fact they had a better idea of who Jesus was than his disciples did at this point! They had no choice but to obey him. This was unprecedented!

If we only realised that Jesus has the same authority today. He is the human face of God on Earth and, as such, trumps all others. Kings, princes, dictators, politicians, even traffic wardens … their authority is bestowed on them by man. Jesus’ authority is from God alone. He has the power to answer any reasonable request … all we need to do is to ask. This is why prayer is so important.
