MATTHEW 10:2-4, MARK 3:13-19, LUKE 6:12-19
Can you imagine being chosen among Jesus’ first twelve disciples, being part of the most famous and effective dozen in history? They were all creating a legacy for themselves, though they didn’t know it at the time. Although, apart from the main characters of this story, little is known about most of them, they have become giants of the Church, canonised and lionised and, probably, also sanitised.
Yet they were all ordinary people like you and I. Today they would be street sweepers, clerks, accountants or shop keepers that Jesus would choose. And he still does choose these people, there is no hierarchy in his choice, despite the structures we tend to build. You may not be one of ‘the twelve’ but you have been chosen too and, you never know, your exploits too may form the stuff of legend! We don’t know this, of course, all we can do is fulfil our calling as God’s chosen and hope that our legacy is a good one.
