MATTHEW 8:5-15, LUKE 7:1-10

This pagan, this Roman Centurion showed more faith in Jesus than anyone else in Israel. This Gentile had put the Jews to shame here. His faith was such was that he was willing to accept that Jesus could heal his servant from a distance without sight or touch or any form of direct intervention. He was able to say this because he understood the concept of authority. He knew that the authority given to him, a Centurion, was such that everything he ordered his men to do, would be done without question. He naturally expected that Jesus’ authority would work in the same way and he was right.

This is very much a lesson for us, as followers of the same Jesus. Jesus still has the authority to act in any way he wishes with 100% results. This does not mean we make the same claim as the Centurion and expect Jesus to answer our requests for a miracle or healing. This would put him in a box or in a bottle as a ‘genie’. Instead we put the onus on Jesus and only have expectations when Holy Spirit gives us the faith to do so. This is important and a great boost to our faith when it all clicks together. On the reverse side, when expectations are nothing more than a hope, a ‘failure’ will be down to us and could provide a setback for our faith journey. So proceed with care!
